What is Electric Cardioversion?

Electric cardioversion is a safe procedure in which electric shocks are used to return a heart back to its normal rhythm. Depending on your diagnosis, the method of electric cardioversion may vary. A defibrillator is used for external purposes while an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator is reserved for internal use.

  • Defibrillator – Electrode patches that are connected to the defibrillator are placed on the chest and back, which deliver an electric shock to your heart. The electricity briefly stops all electrical activity of the heart, allowing the heart to reset and return to a normal rhythm. Occasionally more than one shock or a shock with higher energy is necessary.
  • Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator – An implantable device that restores a regular heartbeat by sending electrical energy to the heart when it senses a fast, abnormal heart rate.
