What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a mechanical problem with compression of vital structures at the juncture between the collarbone and first rib. Compression of blood vessels can cause injury and result in blood clots. More commonly, compression of nerves to the arms can result in numbness, pain, and weakness. This can be very disabling and interfere with occupational and athletic activities.

Treatment can require very delicate surgery, depending on the type of TOS.
